How to Celebrate the New Year

The majority of people celebrate the new year as a time to welcome in the different calendar year. In the traditional calendar, the year of the new commences at the start of the month. However, it could also be celebrated at any time of the year.

Romans had made promises to Janus

Throughout the years, Romans made promises to Janus to bring the year into a new beginning. They made sacrifices Janus while also exchanging gifts during New Year's Day. They also made a resolution which was usually the promise of good conduct in the coming year.

According to Roman myth, Janus had two faces one of which was forward-looking and one that was looking towards the past. Janus was the protector of bridges, doorways and thresholds. His two faces allowed him to see into the future and reverse while looking forward.

According to mythology of old, among the top things you could make for New Year's Day was to take a vow. In essence, it was an act of oath to God to be good in the coming year.

Ancient Egyptians

It was believed that the celebrations of Ancient Egypt were not only an avenue to increase your country's influence and wealth they also elevated their people to a more spiritual level. These festivals also highlighted the cycle of life.

Egyptians were the first to establish a calendar as a function of the solar cycles which comprised a 365-day year and three seasons. The calendar of their civil government was divided into twelve months that had 30-day periods. A month is named in honor of one of the major festivals that took place during that month. For these events, the state provided food and alcohol to the public. Priests sang hymns, fed the gods, and performed ceremonies to ensure the gods' goodwill.

Chinese

Xin Nian, also known as the Chinese New Year, is one of the most important festivals in China. It is celebrated for a few days, typically from January 21 to February 20 on the Chinese calendar.

Before the Chinese New Year The Chinese New Year is when people make the house and visit their relatives. They also eat special foods and engage in rituals. These rituals are thought to rid the home of bad luck and eliminate evil spirits.

Fireworks are lit up in many areas to ward off evil. Dancer dances, too, are performed to bring luck.

The Chinese New Year also marks the beginning of spring. People send good luck wishes, and pray for a favorable harvest.

Coptic

In the midst of all the calendars that are ancient among them, that of Coptic New Year is among the oldest. It is based on the ancient Egyptian calendar. It also has a unique spiritual flavour.

The Coptic New Year is celebrated on the first day of the Egyptian month of Thout. It is also known as the Feast of the Martyrs. It is a celebration of the martyrs' death, as well as the beginning of the new year. The festival also celebrates those who professed faith their whole life. The church also reschedules to celebrate the Feast of the Cross, that is observed on the 17th day of each month.

The Coptic calendar is divided into three seasons: the winter, the summer in addition to the spring. Each season has its own significance. It is during the summer that we celebrate the time for the Nile River floods. During this time, prayers are recited to pray for the rise levels of Nile River waters.

German

Traditionally, the German new year is celebrated on the 31st of December. This is known as Silvester. The Silvester name originates from the fourth century Pope Sylvester I. His feast day is also celebrated on this date.

In the month of Silvester, Germans make preparations to welcome the new year. They eat, drink, as well as give gifts of luck. They also place themselves in the company of many good luck charms.

It is believed that the German New Year celebrations include a mixture of animistic rituals. The fireworks are also a significant part to the event. These may be private or government sponsored. They may be loud and sparkling , or subdued and subtle. Everyone around the world enjoy fireworks.
